Parents of SpEd Kids - UNITE!

I just read something that Moi;) posted, here, and it made me ill. All about how the government is once again screwing over the families of children with special needs and IEPs. All about how the government is making it OUR problem to prove that OUR children are not learning from what THEY'RE supposed to be teaching. Hmmm....let's see, if my child's IEP program is WRONG, or no longer current, or not being FOLLOWED correctly, I'd want to see some change. No, we as parents have to fight the system and the courts are going to stand by and let our children lose precious years of education (as if they're already not far enough behind). I URGE you to click here and read Moi's post, post it on your blog, and let's write letters to the Supreme Court! It's time we stand up to them and send them a nice big GFYS letter (pardon my french).

Thanks, Moi ;)for bringing that to our attention! You rock!

UPDATE: Brian and Andrew's Mom has also taken off on that tangent. She is speaking about how we already feel like we need to do more or that we're somehow failing our children by not doing enough and not the SCOTUS goes and does THIS to us!!!!!!!! Come ON people! I really wonder when they're going to decide that the schools get to raise our children also! You know, and if we don't like the way they're being raised, well, then we'll have to prove the schools wrong.

Ok, time to go home now. Done ranting. Please feel free to continue your commentary.

Hmmm. While O'Day's statement that the burden of proof lies with the aggrieved party seems sound...I don't like the way that translates into complete authority for the schools.
I've never been a fan of public schools and I don't even have a special needs kid.
I wish that we could all just work together to educate our kids but I know that's unrealistic...
Huhm, with something like public school, which is publicly funded, it seems to me that there ought to be some kind of checks and balances...If a parent is dissatisfied, they absolutely ought to have the right to question the school and have those questions addressed in a satisfactory manner. The school should have to prove that it is meeting each and every child's needs...I'm just, unhappy about this whole situation, and I'm more than unhappy with the schools.
I look forward to reading other comments on this.

I am surprised that this post dodn't generate more comments. I keep checking hoping to jump in to something brilliant.
We've got to organize a mass force of ALL parents to write letters and make phone calls and stop this nonsense--this demanding of complete abdication of parental rights at the school doors.

I'm sorry, but this completely reminded me of a Far Side cartoon that my husband absolutely loved - a building with the sign:
"Dyslexics of the World - UNTIE!"
Being dyslexic he found it rather amusing.

Bunny, I hear ya! I'm so sorry that you're stuck in the middle of all of this. That's the thing will "those who set the laws and regulations," they ALL can afford to fight if things are wrong, they ALL can afford to get the BEST there is for their kids...they've NEVER had to worry about what bill doesn't get paid this month so that THEIR child gets services. I SO hear you!

Don't stop fighting....don't stop writing congressmen...school boards...and yes, the supreme court.

There has to be a way. I personally have emailed tons of people about this, and being a grandmother....I know that this issue hits EVERY family somewhere. EVERY one. Just like alcoholism...musical ability...mental illness....artistic ability...sense of humor, brilliance, autism, athleticism. Each of these syndromes?....to only name a few...can be found in every family.
Please, you guys....don't give up. You are the future....it can be done.

You are WAY ahead of where we were in the 50's.....thank God! Meem
